Project description/aims
On behalf of the municipality of Dippach, the existing building of the elementary school on the Rue des Écoles in Schouweiler, which was completed in 2016, was expanded for the future need for additional space for cycle 1 (“Préscolaire”/ “Spielschule”) and the “précoce” (day care centre).
With the aim of centralising the group rooms for cycle 1, all rooms of this learning cycle find themselves in the extension building in the future.
Design concept/functions
The new extension connects to the two floors of the existing elementary school building. On the same level as the existing précoce, an additional third group room has been created, connected to a quiet room for the young users. In addition, four further group rooms for cycle 1 supplement the room program on the ground floor level of the existing building.
In addition to the necessary rooms to accommodate the technical equipment, the lower floor offers space for three group rooms for cycle 1, one of which can also be used as a conference room if required. These new spaces provide visual connections to the newly created schoolyard spaces. The two floors are connected by a two-story atrium, which accommodates the universal access circulation and also provides a play zone/indoor play area. Here the children can spend their break time during bad weather and rest in the niches provided for this purpose or use the climbing wall to be active.
Materials
Design-wise, in terms of form language and materiality, the extension leans heavily on the existing school building. Both the multi-colored facade material and the floor coverings inside the building are continued in the extension.
Energy concept
The existing wood chip plant ensures the heat supply of the new building. While the existing building is supplied via a central ventilation system, the new building has an independent ventilation system to supply the group rooms with fresh air.
Additional sanitary areas are provided on both floors. The roof area enlarged by the extension accommodates an expansion of the existing photovoltaic system.
